Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there
may be found in Silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good
terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to
others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud
and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare
yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will
be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as
well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution
in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not
blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and
everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign
affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and
disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of
the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of
spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with
imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a whole-
some discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe,
not less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And
whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it
should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be;
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

"I will not be satisfied for Lee to be a run-of-the-mill
Christian liberal arts school. We will undertake any pro-

our students need."

The College Seeks A New Direction

LEE GETS A NEW PRESIDENT

Dr. Charles W. Conn assumed the of-
fice of President of Lee College in the
Fall of 1970. He is faced with the neces-
sary task of expanding Lee College to
meet the demanding aspects of a
changing world. Dr. Conn has proven
himself a capable leader in many areas
of the church, most recently serving as
General Overseer of the Church of God.
Exhibiting a genuine concern for the
students, Dr. Conn seems to have
grasped the reins of government firmly
in his hand. We, the Student Body of
Lee College, welcome Dr. Charles W.
Conn as our new President.

VICE-PRESIDENT AULTMAN LEADS
COLLEGE ACADEMICALLY

This was the third year of service to
Lee College for Vice-President Donald
S. Aultman. At the time of his appoint-
ment to Lee College, the school was
restructured into a four-year Liberal
Arts College with three divisions: Arts
and Sciences, Religion, and Teacher
Education. Dr. Aultman helped im-
mensely in piloting the new program
toward full accreditation by the South-
ern Association of Colleges and Sec-
ondary Schools. This year, Dr. Aultman
was selected for inclusion in the twelfth
edition of AMERICAN MEN OF SCI-
ENCE, BEHAVORIAL SCIENCE DIVI-
SION.

Dr. Charles Conn, PRESIDENT

ADMINISTRATIVE POWER KEPT
IN PERSPECTIVE

As Vice-President Aultman stated in
a recent interview, "Probably the most
demanding aspect of college adminis-
tration is to keep the needs of all areas
of campus life in perspective. Students,
faculty, administration, and the Board
of Directors all have points of view to
which one must respond. Appropriate
reaction to each of these domains of
academia is essential to responsible
leadership."

25

-Donald S. Aultman, Vice-President and Dean of the College.

26

Responsible student participation in
the affairs of the school is being encour-
aged. Active concern has been shown
in the administration to create more
dialogue between students and itself,
as is shown in the following statement
by the Vice-President and Dean of Lee
College.

"The Lee College student is an un-
usual person. He is generally equal in
intelligence and maturity to other col-

lege students I have met, but is far
above the average in dedication. I am
constantly amazed at the tremendous
spirit, loyalty, and cooperativeness of
Lee College students. On the subject of
student power, I would suggest that a
first question which must be considered
is whether the college will take the
place of the parent while the student is
in college residence. It appears that the
parents of Lee students expect the col-

lege to assume responsibility in this
area of student life. Accepting this re-
sponsibility, I believe that the college
should encourage student participation
in all areas of academe from curriculum
planning to life in the residence hall.
Students must be involved in meaning-
ful decision making if the educational
process is to have maximum relevance
to their college experience."

A STANDARD OF CONTINUAL
IMPROVEMENT IDEALIZED

"The College will seek to continue its
academic growth by stabilizing the cur-
riculum and maintaining an openness
to innovation and change. In this frame-
work we will implement specific pro-

gram enrichment in several areas of
study far beyond the levels achieved in
meeting minimum standards for ac-
creditation by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools."

HORACE WARD DIRECTS
STUDENT SERVICES

Dr. Horace Ward, Jr. has served Lee
College as Dean of Students for two
years. Dr. Ward has stated that he has
had ample opportunity to observe the
strength of character, willingness to
bear responsibility, and the social con-
cern of the students. Furthermore, he
feels that in all these matters, Lee Col-

lege students are truly impressive.
While still a young man, he has received
many honors. Most recently he was se-
lected for inclusion in the 12th edition
of AMERICAN MEN OF SCIENCE, BE-
HAVORIAL SCIENCE DIVISION.

ADMISSIONS DIRECTED BY
DR. BUTLER

Dr. Stanley Butler serves as Dean of
Admissions. He says that Lee must con-
tinue to be sensitive to the needs of our
students. Dr. Butler wants to make the
necessary academic changes that
would better equip the graduates of Lee
for their goals in life. He feels strongly,

BOARD OF DIRECTORS LEGISLATE
PROGRESS

The Board of Directors of Lee College
is the true governing force of the
School. Twelve men form the Board to
rect the business and decide the poli-
cies of our college. Lynwood Maddox,
practicing lawyer from Atlanta, Georgia,
gifted speaker, enthusiastic lay witness

for Christ, presents obvious personal
and professional talents needed in an
expanding institution. Thurman Curt-
singer, from Lawter, Oklahoma, suc-
cessful businessman, faithful church-
man, a long time supporter of Lee, is
the man most likely to see the school
in terms of efficiency. Louis H. Cross,
pastor of Tremont Avenue, Greenville,
S. C, a progressive but dedicated in-
dividualist, is bold enough to speak but
fair enough to listen.

These men, as well as others, in ses-
sion, compose a legislative body which
determines school policy. They select
and employ the college president, sub-

ACADEMIC PROGRESS ENHANCED

Lee College has concentrated on up-
dating all phases of its academic pro-
gram this past year. Progress has been

particularly noticeable in the Science
Department. The Lee College science
program was recently divided into two
full departments: physical science and
biological science. The physical sci-
ence department offers foundation
courses for students specializing in
physical science or mathematics. The
biological science department offers
majors in biological science.

Lee Vikings Continue

Tension rises. The cries of loyal fans
echo harmoniously in the Lee College
fieldhouse as the powerful Vikings take
the floor. The stage is set for another
thrilling victory.

Under the direction of Head Coach Dale
Hughes, the Vikings continued their dom-
ination of the Southern Christian Athletic
Conference by capturing their fifth con-
secutive league title. The smooth sailing
cagers also won the Lee Invitational Tour-
nament en route to an outstanding 23-6
season.

Two points are on the way for guard Ed Foddril

School Spirit! What would it be
without the enthusiasm of the Viking
Cheerleaders? The crowd follows
anxiously as they lead them in a cry
for victory. Throughout the season the
students declare — We're number
One!

The Viking Cheerleaders have par-
ticipated in the Southern Christian
Athletic Conference competition for
four consecutive years, and each year
they have honored Lee College by
bringing home a second place trophy.
This trophy symbolizes a year of hard
work and dedication from each girl.

This year's squad sparked spirit

With the fall came football. With football came seven teams

play. However, in tournament action, the Men of Lee squeaked
out a 7-6 victory over the Seniors for the coveted crown.

The all-star team consisted of Paul Barnes, Glen Bell, David

the Seniors fought on to an undefeat-

in Intramural Play

The Women's Intramural consists of high-spirited
young ladies, who are interested in sports and keeping
in shape. They compete against each other in basketball,
volleyball, softball, and often a game of football. Under
the leadership of Miss Dorothy Quails and Miss Judy
Maxwell, the group launched into a year of funfilled
games and excitement. Enthusiasm, sparked by Becky
Lewis the club president, promoted an enjoyable year
for all.

UPSILON XI

Upsilon Xi, Lee College's oldest fraternal organi-
zation, began the 1970-71 academic year with an
extremely young club. They moved quickly, however,
and pushed their fall project, Sadie Hawkins, which
was an unprecedented success. The men of Upsilon
Xi also published a calendar, sponsored a retreat
for returning members, and maintained their tradi-
tional Reflections project. During the second semes-
ter Upsilon Xi prepared itself for the future. It did
have time to field a competitive basketball squad,
put on their annual spring project musical pomposity,
and to close the year on a note of reflection with
their annual spring banquet.

Francis Bacon, sixteenth cen-
tury statesman, philosopher, and

condemn studies, simple men ad-
mire them, and wise men use
them." Members of Pi Delta Omi-
cron, the Religion Division honor
society, acknowledge allegiance
with the last clause of that famous
statement, and as a result of their
diligence in study, they are de-
serving recipients of membership
of Pi Delta Omicron. This society
exists not only for the purpose
of developing Christian character
through the promotion of scholar-
ship, but also for the cultivation
of responsibility, and for the fos-
terage of spiritual fellowship.

Pi Delta Omicron endeavors to
aid its contsituency in the follow-
ing manner: it shall encourage the
pastor to lead his flock with the
staff of righteousness; the teacher
to hold high the torch of knowl-

in the promotion of God's king-

Religious tracts are an important tool in the work ot PFC

PIONEERS FOR CHRIST exists
to train young men and women
to become effective witnesses
for Christ regardless of the pro-
fession they enter. The motivat-
ing philosophy of PFC is that the
public school teacher, the born-
again banker, and the minister
must all tell the lost about Jesus
Christ.

From an embryonic beginning
in the spring of 1957, Pioneers
for Christ has grown in size and
outreach. The youths take the
gospel to the rich and the poor
alike, thus gaining experience
that will benefit them as they
carry the gospel around the

GO YE
INTO ALL
THE WORLD..

This was the Great Commission of
Jesus to His disciples. The call still echoes
forth today. The Missions Department of-
fers a challenge to those desiring fulfill-
ment in a life of dedicated Christian Ser-
vice.

Whether it be in Hong Kong, in Israel,
or in Peru, the need for missionary in-
volvement is great. To the four corners
of the globe, the Gospel must be
preached.

Many of our past and present repre-
sentatives recall their days of preparation
at Lee College.

What greater gift could one give to his
Master than complete dedication to the
call of Missions?

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Man's ultimate destiny depends not on whether
he can learn new lessons or make new dis-
coveries and conguests, but on his acceptance

Platitudes are the usual thing on pages such as this. Here, there shall be none. I can only give
thanks for those who have helped me in the production of a small piece of history, the 1971
Vindagua. I must give my heartfelt thanks to Honette Echols, Mrs. Lois Beach, Mr. Humbertson
(sponsors of the book), and to Dr. Don Aultman, the administrative representative. To Charles
McKinney and Flavius Lee of the Church of God Publishing House; to my staff members, espe-
cially Stephen Thayer, Dean Cleghorn, Helen Foley, Jym Agee, and Phyllis Lane; and to the
students, Faculty, and Administration of Lee College; without the help of whom this book could
not have become what it is today, the credit must be given for a job well done.
